During meditation, if my body moves or feels itchy, what should I do?

Question:

During meditation, my body moves involuntarily, and my face feels itchy. What should I do in this situation?

Master Qingliang Yue:

Itching on the face or elsewhere, the urge to move, or any wandering sensations in the body are all manifestations of a scattered *yi* (mind-intent). *Yi* is *qi* (vital energy).

All these wandering sensations are reactions of *Qiji* activity, reflecting the instability of the *yi*. Because matter—these physical phenomena—and mind are one, when you experience these changing bodily sensations, you must recognize that they originate from the *mind*, not from any material reaction. Matter itself is illusory and nonexistent; it is all a projection of the mind. Therefore, any bodily reaction must be traced back to the mind.

When we discuss bodily sensations here, we are essentially talking about the mind. Thus, you must always look for the root cause in the mind. In future meditation practice, whenever any physical issue arises, always seek its origin in the mind.

Note:

Experiencing itching or restlessness during meditation indicates that you are in the "resistance phase" of sitting. This happens because the mind is still unsettled, with frequent distractions. Mastering proper stillness techniques will resolve this issue.
