How to Train the Mind Through Daily Encounters

There is not a single person in the world completely free from suffering, nor anyone who is 100% happy. People live amidst all kinds of pain and worries every day: the suffering of illness, family discord, career stagnation, financial hardship, separation, anxiety about the future, and the pain of being misunderstood… These can be summarized as the Eight Sufferings of life: birth, aging, sickness, death, resentment and hatred, separation from loved ones, the flourishing of the Five Aggregates, and the frustration of unfulfilled desires.

The instinct to seek pleasure and avoid pain is a natural response of ordinary people who operate within the derivative state of thought. This behaviour is, broadly speaking, a form of meditative positivism. From this perspective, no one is without meditative activity. However, lacking a fundamental solution, one continues to live each day in mental and physical bondage to suffering. You might say, “But I don’t feel like I’m suffering—I feel happy every day.” That’s only because you haven’t experienced higher forms of joy; you've developed tolerance to your current pain. For example, you live in and are limited by your physical body: you must eat at set times, sleep when tired, and endure pain when sick. You have no idea there exists a beautiful experience entirely free from bodily sensation. Such joy must be attained through actual meditative positivism. Without it, you won’t even know what your real problem is. You’re constantly driven by emotions and thoughts, unaware that all problems arise from your own internal operations. You keep seeking external solutions.

For example, I spoke with my eldest aunt yesterday. She’s in her eighties, lives alone, is physically uncomfortable all over, and can’t even cook for herself, so she hires a part-time caregiver. Every call with her is filled with complaints—about how others treat her poorly, and how her pension is split between the caregiver and medicine. Yesterday, she mentioned wanting to buy a massage chair because the last time I massaged her back, she felt great. She asked if buying a massage chair would help. Honestly, I don’t know how to help her. I know the root of her suffering—her heart is full of complaints and resentment. In her eyes, there’s not a single good person. Every conversation is full of blame and criticism, even about her husband who passed away over 20 years ago. With such a mindset, what good will any device or medicine do? I tried explaining the principles, shared my own examples, taught her specific mental training techniques—but she just said she felt irritable and couldn’t do it. Sigh… some people, you can only watch as they suffer. Should I prescribe her medicine? If the mind doesn’t change, what can medicine do? It only addresses symptoms temporarily. Without a change in mindset, the illness won’t disappear, because mind and matter are one.

That’s why this can only be resolved through meditation practice. Different thought contents correspond to different perceptions: focus aligns with the Heavenly Way, while hatred leads to hell. If you can remain unattached to any thought content and simply maintain awareness, you will be free from the suffering of samsara (here meaning the endless switching between mental contents, being unable to escape the interference of thoughts).

Even though we may not yet have reached such high levels, through systematic study of principles and diligent meditation practice, we can train our minds in daily life by encountering various situations. You’ll be able to operate differently from ordinary people—by not operating. Not engaging in thought processes prevents subsequent mental fluctuations attached to thought contents. You’ll maintain a soft heart and a calm mind, which is essential for physical health. Achieving this requires a structured system of principle-based learning and meditative positivism. It cannot be solved with just a method or two. The key lies in your mind—your level of thought. If that doesn’t change, your problems cannot be solved at the root. Everything originates from thought. Thought is the source of all things.
