Yongjia Master’s ‘Song of Enlightenment’ strikes like thunder, revealing the heart-essence of a thousand years of Zen: “The idle sage of non-action, supreme learning relinquished; neither abandoning delusions, nor seeking Truth.” Master Qingliangyue, drawing upon 30 years of practical realization, deciphers each line, guiding you through the mist of words: “The true nature of ignorance is Buddha-nature” is not mere philosophy, but the truth behind every thought; “The illusory empty form is the Dharmakaya” is not a metaphor, but the key to the resonance of body-mind with the cosmos. Across 133 installments, from the daily mindfulness of “neither clinging to pleasure nor pain is Right Mindfulness” to the sudden enlightenment key of “Perfecting eighty thousand doors in a snap,” we demystify practice pitfalls and restore the living wisdom of Zen’s “No dependence on words, directly becoming Buddha.” Here, there is no mysticism, only practical realization; no talk of future lives, only unwavering focus on the present. When the Dharma illuminates reality, afflictions are Bodhi, and birth-death is Nirvana itself. Are you ready to unveil life’s deepest secret?

Lecture 2: The True Nature of Ignorance is Buddha-Nature; The Illusory Empty Form is the Dharmakaya

✨ Summary ✨

The line from Yongjia Master’s ‘Song of Enlightenment’ — “The true nature of ignorance is Buddha-nature; the illusory empty form is the Dharmakaya” — points directly to the core of practice:

Ignorance and Buddha-nature are fundamentally one; the physical body and the Dharmakaya have never been separate.

Core Decoding:

1.“The True Nature of Ignorance is Buddha-Nature”**

▶ Meaning: The essence of ignorance is Buddha-nature.

Just as ice is the solid form of water, ignorance is a temporary state arising from attachment within the Tathagatagarbha (Buddha-essence).

Core Insight: Ignorance is not “darkness,” but a wondrous manifestation of the Tathagatagarbha.

2. “The Illusory Empty Form is the Dharmakaya”

▶ Meaning: All illusory phenomena of the physical form are the natural display of the Dharmakaya (Truth Body).

Just as a wave is a temporary form of the ocean, the physical body is a transient projection of the Dharmakaya.

Core Insight: The Dharmakaya pervades all things; the physical body is merely its “temporary manifestation.”

002. The true nature of ignorance is Buddha-nature; the illusory empty form is the Dharmakaya.

Afflictions are Bodhi; ignorance is the True Eternal. Hence, “The true nature of ignorance is Buddha-nature.” This realization marks the completion of another stage of practice. Only upon returning to the state of the Tathagatagarbha do you instantly recognize that all thoughts, all delusions—everything you previously deemed false—are, without exception, wondrous functions *of* the Tathagatagarbha. They arise *from* the Tathagatagarbha as its inherently empty, wondrous functioning. There is no question of “removing” or “not removing” them, for they inherently lack such a substantial nature; they are not ultimately real. Thus, the issue of removal is irrelevant. Simultaneously, they *are* a function, a wondrous activity, *initiated by* the Tathagatagarbha. This is the meaning of “The true nature of ignorance is Buddha-nature.”

Then, “The illusory empty form is the Dharmakaya.” How do all the phenomena of the natural world arise? How are they produced? They all arise *because of* the Tathagatagarbha; they are a manifestation *of* the Tathagatagarbha. Just as ice is a form of water’s existence, all ignorance, all illusory empty forms, are forms of water’s existence—they are forms *of* the Tathagatagarbha. Therefore, “The illusory empty form is the Dharmakaya.”

When you realize this state in the future, then every tangible, visible phenomenon will immediately *be* your body; it will be one with you. For example, right now you are in a classroom listening to a lecture; the teacher writes characters on the blackboard, and you see those characters. After returning to the Tathagatagarbha state, after the dualistic notions of perceiver and perceived have vanished, *you are* the characters on the blackboard. You *are* these characters, utterly clear and distinct. Your mind is supremely awake, supremely lucid, far more sensitive and vivid than it is now.

Another example: you see a stone by the roadside as you walk. In the Tathagatagarbha state, the stone by the roadside *is* you, *is* your body. The entire natural world—all of it—is your body. Yet, everything is perfectly clear and distinct.

Therefore, the stone and the characters on the blackboard are both “illusory empty forms,” yet simultaneously, they are you. “You” refers to the fundamental substance of your mind, the primordial state of your awareness—that is, your “Dharmakaya.” This is the meaning of “The illusory empty form is the Dharmakaya.”
