Protect the continuity of the subconscious as you protect your life.
We must make the subconscious continuous. Once it is continuous, focus will naturally form. The premise of realize Dhyana Concentration is six words: "continuity of the subconscious." We must firmly grasp the word "continuity" and never break it.
In this process, we need to understand why it is not continuous: because of the interference of selective attention. That is to say, in the process of practice—whether it is observing the breath or other methods—we must solve the problem of selective attention.
How to solve the problem of selective attention? Selective attention consists of two parts: one is its selective activity, and the second is its attention. Therefore, there are only two ways to transform selective attention:
One way is to transform its selective function so that it cannot choose. This method requires us to transform it through subconsciousization. Since the subconscious is based on a soft heart, the so-called transformation of the subconscious is to transform it with a soft heart. Because the subconscious In alignment with soft heart, we use a soft heart to transform selective attention.
The other way is to focus on attention itself, that is, to make it able to concentrate on one point. Only these two methods, after transformation, can lead to continuity.
In the process of practice, the reason why we find practice extremely difficult, and why many people fail to realize Dhyana Concentration after months or even years of practice, is that they do not understand the principle—they do not know that concentration can only be formed through the continuity of the subconscious.
Whenever we keep using conscious thinking during practice, the subconscious cannot achieve continuity. Take a simple example: when meditating, if your waist is sore, you should naturally bend over, but if you think sitting straight is the only "proper" way to practice and bending over is not, you might force yourself to sit upright. This is using conscious thinking, which disrupts subconscious continuity.
For beginners in meditation, there is no need to maintain a "standard" posture. No matter how you sit, it's impossible to immediately achieve a "perfect" posture at the beginning. You can start by sitting comfortably—even on a chair, no need for difficult postures like cross-legged sitting or full lotus pose. After all, people without legs can still achieve enlightenment; it's not about the posture. Pretending to maintain a standard pose is just for show, intimidating others or even deceiving yourself, which serves little purpose.
In fact, the first person who succeeded in practice had no specific posture at all—they achieved success naturally during deep sleep, relying on the principle of rest.
Just start with a casual posture. In fact, the very first person who achieved success didn't rely on any specific posture at all. They succeeded naturally while fast asleep, relying on the essence of rest itself. The key was embracing the principle of relaxation, not rigid postures.
For those new to practicing meditation, realize Dhyana Concentration may seem like a remarkable feat. But for those who regularly realize Dhyana Concentration, it's simply a form of rest—no different from sleep, just a different way to recharge. You rest through sleep, while they rest through meditation. It's nothing more than a method of relaxation. So don't treat it as something strange or mysterious. Understanding this allows you to realize Dhyana Concentration with the same mindset as resting. Once you do, you'll stop overcomplicating things and can maintain the continuity of your subconscious. This understanding is crucial.
During meditation, if you notice you're using conscious thinking, let it go immediately. The key is to preserve the continuity of the subconscious—never let it break. If it does, you'll never realize Dhyana Concentration. Only through continuity can focus deepen, subconscious concentration form, and true realize Dhyana Concentration. Without this continuity, success is impossible.
Maintaining subconscious continuity is actually simpler than it seems. We all have the ability to daydream—and don't dismiss this as a flaw. Like waves on the sea, every thought is a natural expression of the mind. If you learn to harness this ability, you can use these associative thoughts to your advantage.
