How to Scientifically Explain the Opening of the Divine Eye?
Student:
Isn’t it very difficult to open the divine eye (clairvoyance)?
Master Qinglianyue:
It’s actually very simple. In the state of meditative concentration within the Desire Realm (Kāma-dhātu Samādhi), one can attain the precursor image of opening the divine eye. Once you reach that precursor state, you’ll realize that opening the divine eye is the easiest among all supernormal abilities. Before attaining enlightenment and before entering the Tathāgatagarbha (Buddha-nature), opening the divine eye is something you must possess. Even if you don't seek it, it will naturally arise—so there’s no need to worry about it.
The reason you still find it difficult is because you're stuck in your current mode of thinking and haven’t transitioned into another mode. It’s like how some people say transcending life and death is hard, but in fact, resolving the issue of life and death—especially physical death—is actually quite easy.
Why does it seem hard? Because it’s like using a computer. Our body is like a computer, and the real you is the one sitting in front of it. You’ve been using this "computer" all day, addicted to it, unable to break free. Just like a kid immersed in an internet café, even parents can’t drag them away—they eat and sleep there. It's become a habit.
That’s what your body is like. You use it every day, and once you stop using it even for a day, you get anxious—you’re addicted. Like opium addiction. Then you begin to say, “I don’t want to rely on this body anymore.” So you start practicing: observe the bodily sensations, and let them go. Practice where the thought arises—whenever you sense yourself using the body, and feel a bodily sensation coming up, you immediately let go.
Or observe the changes in your thoughts—the purpose of observing is to let go. Observe eating, for example—watch the slow motion of eating, observe slowly and mindfully. Eventually, you’ll reach the point where you observe the very initiation of thought. At first, you're focused on the process; in the advanced stages, you focus on the thought itself, no longer the process.
Now, when you want to move your hand, you first have to form the intention. He observes right at that point. He works on this every day. The purpose is to stop using the body—to break the habit of using the body. What he’s cultivating is awareness—the constant awareness that he is using the body, that he is moving his arm, that he is aware of a mosquito bite. And so he continues like this, maintaining awareness at all times that he is using the body.
Once you are aware of using the body, then a subconscious state of "not using the body" begins to form. Gradually, as this subconscious awareness strengthens, one day you will fully transcend the body and be free from its limitations.
This is the principle behind all the Four Foundations of Mindfulness: to break a habitual way of thinking, a fixed pattern, a mental dependency. It’s really very simple.
You may not know where the true practice lies within all these different Dharma methods. But they all work at the same point—the arising of thought. That’s where the work is done. The point of thought’s emergence is called the “Mysterious Pass”. Both Daoism and Buddhism focus their efforts at this exact location.
So the physical body’s life and death—resolving that is actually very easy. As long as you cultivate this well, liberation is simple.
