From elementary school touniversity, we have been learning Western culture. Your understanding of Oriental
culture is shaped by the perspective of Western culture. You are unable to view Oriental traditional culture from an objective standpoint, from a higher vantage point. Instead, you use one culture to judge another. And if the culture you deem 'good' is, in fact, an outdated one, this will lead to judging an advanced culture through the lens of a backward one.
It is like whenfirearms had already been widely used, researchers suggested to Emperor Kangxi that we should study firearms. Despite being such a powerful figure, Kangxi replied, 'What is the point of studying this? We defeated the firearms of the Ming Dynasty with our bows and arrows, which shows that bows and arrows are more advanced. Why should we learn from them?' This illustrates that when your knowledge is limited, it will restrict your ability to recognize something more advanced. Through comparing Oriental and Western cultures, you can verify this point. Our greatest mistake lies in using a relatively backward thing to judge something more advanced. Therefore, next, we will compare Oriental and Western cultures, using this comparison to better understand these two cultures.
When comparing Oriental andWestern cultures, we must first compare how these two cultures were formed. No culture simply falls from the sky; it is created by humans. Therefore, we need to compare these two cultures from the perspective of human cognition and research—how Western culture was formed and how Oriental culture was formed.
First, we must understand thatculture is formed through human study of things. Therefore, our understanding of culture must also come from understanding humanity itself. Humans possess many states of thinking, which, from a psychological perspective, can be divided into two states: consciousness and the subconscious.
Western culture primarily relieson consciousness for research. Consciousness refers to the high-frequency state of selective thinking, what we commonly refer to as divergent thinking. It has two major issues. First, divergent thinking is a linear form of thinking. We live in the present, unaware of the past or the future. This is why disciplines such as archaeology and future prediction studies are invented—it is because we live in a linear, one-dimensional state. Second, in this state, because we are using the high-frequency state of selective thinking, it involves uncertainty.
Therefore, our understanding of things comes from finding relatively graspable laws within this uncertainty—finding necessary patterns from the random. This is a common approach we follow when understanding problems.
To achieve this, when we seek tounderstand the world, there is a common principle: to infer the unknown from the known. This is the method by which Western culture understands things.
Therefore, throughout our schooling, from elementary school to middle school, high school, and university, we are essentially addressing two problems. The first problem we address is the known—knowledge. For example, when we study physics or chemistry, we first master the known concepts. We always tell ourselves that we stand on the shoulders of giants, looking forward, because we need to grasp what is known. The second problem is to master the ability to make inferences. This is a course we must study when learning Western culture, called logic. The central manifestation of logic is mathematics. This is why mathematics is a foundational subject—it is something you cannot avoid. This is because it is a core element of Western culture. Without it, you cannot fully grasp Western culture, as it operates by inferring the unknown from the known."
Therefore, you must have profoundknowledge and also the ability to make inferences. Only then will your abilities be truly strong. Knowledge and ability are the two things you must master; otherwise, you will be unable to understand Western culture. This is a characteristic of how Western culture conducts scientific research
Oriental culture learns throughthe subconscious. Therefore, in learning Oriental culture, we are required to first set aside our current state. This means we must directly overturn the existing system and enter into a subconscious state. This is what we often refer to as 'no eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, or mind.' Those who have studied psychology know that when the macro body is less active, the subconscious can take effect. Therefore, the premise of studying Oriental culture is to 'have no eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, or mind.' The term 'mind' refers to the consciousness of our current state, which must be abandoned in favor of the subconscious thinking of 'no eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, or mind.
Once we abandon this, we are nolonger constrained by the points on this linear path and are freed from this point. As a result, you can easily break through the limitations of time.
In Western culture, how could youeasily break through the limitations of time? You can't do it. You cannot break through the limits of time or space. What is the reason behind this? It’s because you are on a linear path. Once you break through this line, time and space will no longer be obstacles.
In this case, your understandingof knowledge is often suddenly clear and profound. This is why it happened that although Master Huineng was illiterate, when others were reading the Buddhist scriptures, which contained deep and profound teachings, he could immediately understand and grasp their meaning upon hearing them.
What is the reason for this? It isbecause he and the person reading are using two different methods of learning.
The person reading is using the conscious method of learning. For him, there are many unknowns, and he needs to reason them out. As he reads the Buddhist scriptures, he thinks, 'What is this about? Let me think... oh, it's talking about this.' He believes he has figured it out. He is inferring the unknown from the known.
MasterHuineng, on the other hand, was not like this. He broke through in a subconscious state, achieving a breakthrough in understanding the principles. This is a characteristic of Oriental traditional culture."
Therefore, what is the requirementof Oriental traditional culture for scientists? You must possess a certain ability: to have no eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, or mind, and not use your current state. The characteristic of Western culture is that you must use your current state, and use this body for research. For example, when we apply to universities, we have to undergo a medical examination to check if our body is functioning properly, because you need to use it for your studies. So, Western
culture uses eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Oriental culture, on the other hand, is 'no eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, or mind.' The first step is to abandon this in order to proceed. This is from the perspective of the person or the researcher.
