The Purer the Mind, the Smoother the Body: Essential Mind-Body Regulation for Modern People
The idea of "unblocking energy channels" comes from an ordinary person's perspective. In truth, there is no issue of "blocked" or "unblocked" because the channels are inherently open. The apparent obstruction arises solely because our minds are in a state of chaos. When the mind is disturbed, the energy flow seems stuck at certain points—this is fundamentally a problem of thought.
For example, when you feel angry, anxious, or suffer from internal heat, you may experience discomfort as if your vital energy flow is blocked. At times like this, engaging in physical activity or talking it out can help. Once the internal heat and anxiety subside, that blocked energy will clear up and flow smoothly again. Another example, when you ponder a problem with knitted brows, your vital energy flow gets blocked because thinking involves complex logical processing. Therefore, when your thoughts are scattered, your energy pathways manifest as obstructed. The more chaotically your mind functions, the more disordered your energy becomes; the more purely your thoughts flow, the smoother your energy circulates.
Through meditative realization, when your mind reaches a state of pure stability, the energy flow opens up instantly. It feels like you've "unblocked" something, but actually, you've simply adjusted your mind, allowing its inherent openness to manifest. Remember, it was always open. The Tathagatagarbha is inherently free and manifesting. It is not something we create or invent; it pre-exists. Our practice isn't about creating something new, but restoring our original, innate function. Therefore, there are no "magical powers" we use to "unblock" anything. All methods ultimately aim to settle your mind and return it to pure simplicity.
When you hold the concept of "unblocking energy pathways," the very act of "unblocking" becomes a deliberate mental effort. Your mind then engages in thought: "I want to make them flow." Yet this desire itself—"wanting them to flow"—is precisely the manifestation of an agitated mind. At this moment, your consciousness is unsettled and impure, making true flow impossible. The harder you strive to force it, the more obstructed it becomes. Thus, recognize this: you are restoring their innate capacity to flow freely—not forcibly "unblocking" them through contrived effort.
For example, take mindfulness of breathing: If you practice while your thoughts are scattered, you might feel energy sensations manifesting uncomfortably in your head, neck, or chest. If you practice with a calm and settled mind, you'll likely feel gentle energy sensations in the lower dantian (below the navel). Crucially, the act of observing the breath itself pulls your constantly outward-flowing thoughts back to the present experience of breathing. This stops the mental wandering. When you can focus solely on experiencing the breath, your mind becomes less scattered. As the mind settles, the energy flows smoothly and comfortably. It feels like the channels have been "unblocked," but in truth, it is simply the restoration of their original, unobstructed state. (Master Qingliang Yue)
